  • Condition: The condition of this cupped plate is very good. As is common with glassware of this era, there is one 2 1/4" straw mark across the center of the plate. We wonder if two of the saw teeth of the rim were chipped early in its history. The saw teeth vary as you go around the rim and these two teeth seem a little bit lower than the others and perhaps have a little chipping. We really can't tell even using a magnifying glass. There are no other chips, nicks, cracks, hairlines, rubbings, or scratches. (See the photos to judge for yourself.) The gold appears as applied and not worn. There is an unidentified color (sort of reddish nutmeg) around the foot on the underside of the plate. Cleaning did not affect this. The florescent effect under a black light is a bright yellow.

Fenton Cupped 9 1/2" Plate Ivory Custard 4 Crimps Bluebirds Berries w/Gold 1915
An Exquisite 4 Crimped SAW TOOTH RIM Cupped PLATE from FENTON, IVORY Custard Florescent under Black Light
, circa 1915 from Williamstown, West Virginia, USA
    DESCRIPTION:
This is the beautiful crimped, ruffled saw tooth rim cupped plate.  The color is called ivory custard which Fenton produced for a short time starting in 1915.  The ruffled rim has the uniform crimping.  The florescent effect under a black light is a bright yellow.  Margaret & Kenn Whitmyer's Fenton Art Glass 1907-1939 describes this as a bluebird cupped plate on page 26.  The color can vary from a pale off-white to a deep rich cream color.  The gold decoration is applied to highlight the bluebirds and embossing and seems to really make the bluebirds pop out.  The embossed berries and their leaves on the underside of the plate are also highlighted in gold.  The mold used was a 3-section mold.
    CONDITION:
The condition of this cupped plate is very good.
    DIMENSIONS:
The cupped plate has a height of 2 3/8" and it spreads to 9 1/2" across the lower edges while the upper edges tend to vary from 7 1/2" to 7 3/4".  The round foot has a diameter of 3 1/8".
    HISTORY/MARKS:
The brothers, Frank L. and John W. Fenton, founded the Fenton Art Glass Company in 1905 in Williamstown, WV.  The company was among the world’s preeminent producers of handmade art glass for over 100 years.  The company is renowned for innovative glass colors as well as hand painted decorations on pressed and blown glassware.  The company ceased traditional glassmaking in 2011 and now produces glass jewelry, beads and earrings.  According to the book, Fenton Art Glass 1907-1939 by Margaret & Kenn Whitmyer, Fenton produced the cupped plate in this color and pattern in the 1915+ time period.  This is prior to the time period that Fenton marked their items with an oval inscribed on the bottom.
