Historical reference
USS Tresher (SSN-593) - US Navy nuclear submarine, lead ship of the Thresher class.
The order for the manufacture of the submarine was received by the Portsmouth shipyard on January 15, 1958, the laying of the ship took place in the same year, on May 28. Launching took place on July 9, 1960. The Thresher entered service on August 3, 1961.
In 1961-62, Thresher, as the lead ship of its class, underwent an extensive testing program in the Atlantic Ocean and the Caribbean. On September 18-24, 1961, the boat took part in the nuclear exercise Nuclear Submarine Exercise 3-61, held off the northeastern coast of the United States.
On April 10, 1963 SSN-593 "Thresher", accompanied by the rescue vessel ASR-20 Skylark, set out to sea for deep diving in order to test the strength of the hull at the depths limit for the boat (360 m). In addition to 16 officers and 96 crew members, 17 civilian technicians were on board, sent to monitor the performance of its mechanisms during dives. There was a disaster.
Due to a crack in the weld, the engine compartment of the submarine began to fill with seawater, which caused a short circuit in the electrical control circuits of the reactor, resulting in an automatic shutdown of the reactor. Loss of energy is a possible cause of this disaster.
On April 11 at 10:30 am, at a press conference of the Navy, the sinking of the SSN-593 Tresher submarine was officially announced. After the death of this submarine, the type of boats to which it belonged was renamed from "Thresher" to "Permit" after the name of the next boat of this type.
